A near complete copper-alloy Roman lock bolt, dating from c. AD 43-410.

The lock bolt is rectangular in plan with an openwork frame of two rows of three square-shaped apertures.  One side of the frame expanded with an undulating inside edge and a single rectangular notch on the outside. The forward edge of the frame is truncated whilst the opposite side steps up to form handle, again this is also truncated.

Lock bolts form part of a tumbler lock. The key would slide into the cut-outs of the panel and release the lock when rotated. Cf Crummy (1983: 124, nos. 4133-4136); on PAS see HESH-652880, HESH-058774, BH-D2F634.
