An incomplete and in two parts, copper alloy champlevé enamelled circular brooch dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 800 - 1000), Weetch Type 21.
The brooch comprises a central circular panel with a wide recessed rim. The rim is approximately two thirds complete with a small portion now detached from object. The remaining portion of the rim has a beaded outer border with raised curvilinear designs. Two opposing rivets protrude from the rim suggesting the object may have been modified for alternative use, perhaps as a mount.
The central panel depicts a bird holding a branch on a champlevé background. The bird is surrounded by swirls of coloured enamels, namely dark and light blues, and small portions or yellow, red and white. The central panel measures 24mm in diameter.
The reverse of the object is undecorated and is dished in the centre to correlate with the central panel. The rim is flat and undecorated. The object has a light gren patina.
Dimensions: Diameter 39mm; thickness 4mm; weight 13.32g
Ten Harkel, Weetch & Sainsbury (2016) state that at the time of writing 'only four brooches of this type are currently known, three of which were found in England, with a fourth from France.' Since that date, at least 3 others (including this example) have been identified through the PAS. See also: YORYM-5EAB75 and LIN-00BB65.
