Description:
An incomplete silver cufflink of Post-Medieval date, circa AD 1600 - 1700.
Only one circular cuff link remains from a pair of cuff links, which would have been joined together via a chain loop. The surviving cuff link is formed from a circular, flat disc with a flared rim. The chain loop survives.
The circular disc has been pressed to form the front design. The front face is decorated with the stamped design of two hearts beneath a single crown on a cross-hatched background (Lewis Type A) within a raised border.
In the centre of the reverse the attachment loop can be seen. The loop has a circular section and appears to have been soldered to the reverse. The surviving chain link is threaded through the attachment loop. The chain link is shaped into a narrow oval and is circular in section. There is a sharp break in the chain link where it bends.
Dimensions:
Length: 15mm; Width: 15mm; Weight: uncertain, less than 5g.
Discussion:
Cufflinks and buttons featuring similar designs of this style are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662. The design did however continue to be used as a general symbol of love and marriage.
