A complete and well preserved post-medieval gold 'posy' ring, dating to the period AD 1650-1800.
The finger ring has a D-shaped band, convex on the outside and flat on the inside which is plain externally. Inside the band is an inscription in an italic script reading 'God Knitt our hearts in faith'. There is no maker's mark. The finger ring is made of gold which retains its polish although the outside surface has frequent shallow scratches.
The finger ring has a maximum external diameter of 22.4mm, a width of 5.6mm, is 2.2mm thick and weighs 8.20 grams.
While a variety of the inscription on this example is listed by Evans (1931: 42) the spelling is different. The letter forms can be used to aid dating. Oman (1974, 40-41) said that italics became more popular by the mid-17th century. Though this is now considered less accurate it provides a rough date for the ring of c.AD1650 - 1800 it would therefore not be classed as treasure on balance of probability due to its age.
Notes:
The ring is over 10% precious metal but it is most probable that it was less than 300 years old at time of finding and does not qualify as treasure.
