Pottery. Late Iron Age handmade pot, of dark grey reduced fabric with frequent angular temper to length 3mm; possibly burnished on its outer surface. The body is squat and rounded with a flat base. It is almost complete, with one small detached rim sherd separately bagged, and has been wrapped with heavy duty adhesive tape by the finder to prevent the weight of the contents exploding its sides. The vessel is filled with formerly wet and now concreted sand, exactly as it was discovered. Most of the sand is a yellow-buff tint, though with a grey curving line discernible in the open top. The finder has tested the vessel with a ‘pinpointer’ tool which suggests the presence of metal inside it; he has quite correctly deferred further investigation [over a period of several months]. The possibility of ferrous inclusions in the fabric giving a misleading reading was considered; however, the finder has subsequently tested the ‘pinpointer’ with iron filings/steel wool, and it gave no response to this entirely ferrous material. In view of the age of the object – pre-Roman – and the possibility that more than one pre-Roman metal object may be contained by it, the pot is to be subjected to the Treasure process, ref. 2021 T518. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100 BC AD 50.
