An incomplete Early Medieval copper-alloy sleeve clasp dating to circa AD 450-480. It consists of a rectangular bar with a slightly convex outer face and flat reverse. The bar has three raised rectangular bosses with straight edges. Two are located at each end whilst there is a central boss located at the midsection of the bar. Projecting from each boss is an integrally cast rounded knop with central perforation. Projecting from the rear edge of the central boss is a hook element which is now broken and survived by two stubs. The back face is undecorated.
This example falls into Hines’ B12 category, very similar in form to one illustrated at Hines 1993: 47, fig. 90a and SF-51AB7E, though without projecting knops in this case. Penn and Brugmann simplify Hines’ categories and place B12 into wcB12, which falls into their phase FA1, dating to circa AD 450-480.
