DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: WMID-425E87

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: An incomplete copper alloy and silver dress hook of Early Post Medieval dating (16th Century AD).

The Dress hook has a circular back plate, with an engrailed edge. A rectangular copper alloy loop has been attached to the reverse, along with a separate soldered sharp hook which curves back on itself. The front of the dress hook is composite, with a central raised dome, with engrailed edge. Over this is laid incomplete silver filigree wire decoration. The filigree wire decoration probably formed a nine petalled rose, with a central granule and figure of eight shapes on each petal. Some of the filigree decoration has broken off the dome and is now separate. A rope like border holds the dome and filigree in place.

 Dimensions:

Length: 28.1 mm
Width: 18.5 mm
Thickness: 9.9 mm
Weight: 3.4 g

Discussion: This dress hook is similar to that published as no 204 on page 64, by Read (2008) and is consistent with a 16th Century AD dating. A similar one has been recorded on the PAS database as GLO-E3873A, although without the silver filigree wire.

Conclusion: The silver filigree wire probably has a precious metal content in excess of 10%. As it has been found as decoration on a 16th Century dress hook, which means it is older than 300 years, it falls within the remit of the Treasure Act 1996 and should be reported as potential treasure.
