A cast lead spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers form B2, probably dating from the Early to Middle Early Medieval period, about AD 700 - AD 850. It is of sub-rectangular section, with equal sized flat upper and lower surfaces and rounded sides. There is a central, circular perforation of 6.6mm internal diameter. The form B2 was in use from about AD 700 - 1200, but the size of the central hole make an early to Middle Saxon date more likely. The whorl has a cream patina with some brown patches. It is 19.5mm diameter, 9.0mm thick and 19.27g. This type of spindle whorl is illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25. There are many examples of similar spindle whorls on the database for comparison such as SWYOR-DC5806.
