Copper-alloy chain of uncertain date, but potentially Roman or early-medieval. It consists of six interlinked loops of approximately equal size, each formed of a flat strip of metal wrought into a circular tube. Four of the loops have an obvious seam or very narrow gap (a fraction of a millimetre) where their ends meet. The remaining two loops, which are internal (not at either end) and separated by one other loop, have no visible seam, despite being free of any adherent corrosion products or earth that might obscure it.
All of the loops are decorated in the same way: four low circumferential ridges on the outside (one along each edge and two in between) interspersed with three concave channels or grooves. The two outer channels are about equal in width to the ridges but the central one is about three times as wide. Gilding survives within each of the grooves on all of the loops.
No close parallels have yet been identified on this database.
Average external diameter of loops: 9.5mm. Average thickness of loops: 1.0mm. Average width of loops: 6.0mm. Length of chain when suspended from one end: 41.5mm. Weight: 5.3g
