Post Medieval to Modern object, probably the terminal-end part of a fireside companion set tool. It is crudely stylised and is made from sub-rectangular cross-section copper-alloy formed into the upright shape of a horses head and neck. The ears and mane are represented by multiple semi-circular corrugations extending across the full thickness of the piece. Further details are picked out in low-relief decoration on both faces. At the bottom of the neck and in-line with the head a cylindrical knop projects upwards towards the head, partly enclosing the space bounded by the lower head and neck. The base terminates with an expanding curving socketed boss, stepping up in diameter via a series of concentric rings. Although heavily corroded the remains of an internal thread can be seen inside the boss, which would have received the cylindrical shaft of the tool. The shape and style of this boss is commonly seen on other fireside tools of the 19th and 20th century. Circa AD1800-1950
Notes:
If the internally threaded boss at the base of this piece were missing it could easily be interpreted as something more ancient; - hence the inclusion of this relatively modern object on this database.
