Probable copper alloy lid from an Anglo-Saxon workbox. The lid is circular thin sheet of copper alloy with a central hole, containing a suspension loop. The loop consists of a single oval strip of copper alloy looped over at the top, threaded through the hole and then splayed on the reverse to secure it to the lid. Attached to the suspension loop is another small strip of copper alloy looped through the suspension loop, perhaps forming the first link in a chain. There is a further hole to either side of the central hole although it is not certain whether these are areas of damage. Only a small fragment of the original outer perimeter survives, giving the lid a diameter of 43.42mm. The suspension loop is 14.98mm in length. The reverse of the lid is very worn, and there is a 4.6mm wide band of iron-coloured patina around the perimeter, perhaps indicative of solder or where the bronze was in contact with wood. Workboxes date to the second half of the seventh century or the early decades of the eighth.
