A complete copper alloy coin weight dating to the Post Medieval period (AD 1760-1773). The coin weight is for a Portuguese Moidore, equivalent to 27 shillings. Both faces are stamped with S // 27 within a border of dashes or laurels running around the edge. The object has a greenish-brown patina.
This weight would have been part of a set of 11 weights for the guinea, half guinea, quarter guinea and also the Portuguese Moidore and Johannes (Joe) coins, which circulated widely in England during the 18th century. Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database include SUR-F4C784 and PUBLIC-3D43A1.
The overall dimensions are as follows: 22.2mm in diameter, 3.81mm in thickness and 8.32g in weight.
