Athelstan coin, type BMC v, c., London mint. An Anglo-Saxon coin. It is not clear which face is te obverse and which is the reverse at first glance as both have a small cross in the centre. Neither face has a bust or any further decoration. This coin is crumpled, with the bent parts turning in the same direction.
The obverse face has an inscription beginning with a cross and reads EÐ'ELST...X'I OT BRIT (S is reversed).
The reverse face has an inscription that reads BIONHTLHO..VND CIVIITX. This appears to be a combination of the misspelled name of a moneyer in Bath (usually written Biorhtulf Mon Bat Civitate) and the London mint (usually written Ere Moneta Lund Civiet). Both faces have very little wear.
