An Elizabethan copper alloy pledge penny dated 1601. Obverse: Queen's bust, quarter left, THE * PLEDGE * OF. Reverse: monogram for ELIZABETH, crowned and accosted by 16 - 01, A - PEN - NY.
Notes:
This is a pattern issued by the mint in London in response to a proposed copper coinage which was never realised at the time (as Snelling 1769 pl 5 no 13; Peck 1970, 3 - 5). The design is paralleled by a series of contemporary medalets (Mitchiner 4511-4512).
