A complete lead alloy 'horn book' dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1700).

The object is flat and rectangular in shape with rounded corners and irregular edges. The face of the toy displays a roughly accurate representation of the English alphabet over a series of five lines: 'ABCDE/FGHI[JK]/LMNO[P]/QRSTV/WXYZ', beneath the alphabet is a cross hatched design. Wear on the face of the object which partially obscures some letters and there is a diagonal bend running through the centre. The reverse of the toy is plain.

Dimensions: Length 42mm; width 35mm; weight 28.2g.

So-called ‘horn books’ were most popular during the seventeenth century and are largely found in rural areas. They acted as teaching tablets, made of wood covered with a thin sheet of horn, and were usually illustrated with the alphabet or the Lord’s Prayer. The examples recorded on the PAS database tend to be lead miniatures. They mostly come from the North-West, Yorkshire and the Midlands. These miniatures often show inaccurate representations of the alphabet, and it is likely they were dolls’ accessories (Lewis 2012, 100–1) rather than educational aids.

Similar examples on the PAS database include: LVPL-C7E669 and LANCUM-55B474
