A copper alloy cruciform mount, probably of post-medieval to modern date (c.1700 -1900). The mount is of cross-crosslet form, with openwork squares between the cross arms. It has been pressed from thin sheet metal and the edges of the mount are turned over from the upper surface to the lower. The upper surface bears a decorative border created from line following the shape of the cross. On the reverse is a faint central scar where a soldered rivet was presumably located - this is now missing. The mount has a medium brown, sometimes green colour.
The mount is 19.5mm long, 19mm wide and weighs 0.8 grams
The form of this cross is identified by Mitchiner (1986, 244; ref. 941) as being connected with The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. The suggestion that this is a pilgrim emblem has also been suggested by Read (1995, 114-115; ref. 728). Read suggests a pre-Reformation date for a parallel he illustrates. However, it can be strongly argued that this object was made on an industrial press, hence the suggested date. They are shown in the Army and Navy Stores Catalogue of 1907 on page 197 described as "fancy nails". Many similar mounts have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, including: PUBLIC-92D5FC, HAMP-BB4F16, BH-686F15, SOMDOR-B024B3 and CORN-72D8F7. This artefact has been found close to similarly shaped mounts including OXON-961903, OXON-95FEF6, OXON-95F559 and OXON-95ECB2.
