A near complete Medieval copper alloy mirror case of late 13th or 14th century date. Both sides are decorated with an arcuate cross formed of double lines of punched dots, with crossed medial lines flanked by curves in each quarter. There is a double lugged hinge retaining its copper alloy spindle and, at the opposite edge, a catch composed of a pair of lugs, one projecting from each side and offset to the other. The interior contains the corroded remnants of the mirror and (calcium carbonate) cement used to secure the mirror in place (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 361). The case has been crushed and is now in a very fragile condition with fragments having broken away from both sides.

Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrates three examples from excavations in London, all from contexts dating to c.AD 1270-c.1350. A number of examples have also been recorded on the PAS database, including SF-EA1A3A, WAW-9C72B6, IOW-A157A4, BERK-C40BA6; DENO-D34205; ESS-DE8948; GLO-F5BBB1; HAMP-1F06B3; LIN-1410F5l; LVPL-5BD171; NCL-9A1560; NLM-E452C5; NMS-E27957; SOMDOR-514B21; SUR-FF1263; SWYOR-8F9AE0; WILT-3CA276 and YORYM-620D84.
