Silver denarius of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14).
Obv. IMP CARAVSIVS P AVG; Laureate, draped and cuirassed right
Rev. ROMAE AETERNAE (V); Roma seated facing, holding (Victory?) in right hand and (spear or sceptre?) in left, in hexastyle temple.
Mintmark: - // SRS
SRS is an erroneous form of RSR and it appears on a small number of other pieces. The overall style of the coin suggests it is one of the later coins of the silver issue. There are two other know denarii which show Roma in a temple, but they have different legends. This coin is the first of its type to have been recorded.
