A pierced Post Medieval silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603) dating to AD 1578 on the coin. Second coinage, plain cross initial mark. Tower of London mint. North (1991: 134) No. 1997.
The coin has been pierced by a sub-oval hole from the reverse throgh to the obverse at 11 o'clock.
Notes:
This find was recorded by images and information provided by the finder, not seen by the FLO.
The coin has been pierced, indicating a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential Treasure (under Treasure Act 1996). However, coins dating after AD 1180 with similar piercings are also known in hoards of currency, suggesting that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins. It therefore cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as another type of object at the time that the coin was deposited.
