Heavily corroded forged wrought iron Medieval stirrup. The frame is approximately 126mm tall by 100mm wide and is in the shape of a convex-sided triangle with the apex at its attachment end. The straight tread-plate is inset by around 14mm up from the base. The sides are approximately 11mm wide and expand at the basal end via a linear taper just before the tread-plate to form 26mm wide rectangular side-plates. The tread-plate is the same width as the side-plates. The suspension loop attached to the neck at the apex has entirely corroded away. There is a dearth of information available on British stirrups with much of the material concentrating on Scandanavian types. Ward Perkins, J. London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940 (Anglia Publishing reprint 1993) p86-94 covers stirrups, the illustrations in which suggest that this example may well be late Early Medieval in date, although since it is not extant the form of the suspension loop cannot be compared. The same is true for examples illustrated in Seaby, W and Woodfield, P. Viking Stirrups from England and Their Background, although the shape of the side plate looks characteristic. Based on what survives this example is tentatively dated to the late Early Medieval period through into the Medieval. Circa AD900-1450.
