A complete copper alloy Cartwheel Penny of George III (AD 1760-1820). Minted at the Soho Mint, Birmingham in 1797.
The coin worn and heavily corroded. The obverse would have had the right facing laureate and draped bust of the king but only the king’s forehead is now visible. On legend on the raised rim would have read GEORGIVS III D G REX. The reverse would have had the seated figure of Britannia facing left, holding a trident in her right hand. Only the head of the trident is now visible. The legend on the raised rim would have read BRITANNIA 1797.
The coin is counter marked on both the obverse and the reverse with two pipe shaped stamps.
