HARNESS FITTING

Unique ID: SUR-7BF735

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy Medieval strap fitting comprised of three articulated elements; a strap loop in the form of a split pin with plano-convex cross section and rounded terminal loop, a link ring and a hooked strap fitting with a square plate, 15mm in width. The fitting with the plate has an integral loop which emerges from the lower edge, curls around the link ring and ends in a lozengiform terminal drilled to take a rivet which appears to be integrally cast to the reverse of the square plate. Traces of gilding remain; any other original decoration to the plate has been lost.

Notes:

Comparable to HAMP-CBEF93 and SF3423. See also Geake (2001, Ill. 16). Goodall (2011, 378-379; fig. 13.8, nos L91-92) illustrates similar fittings, interpreted as connections between reins and the cheekpieces of bits. A pair of examples in gilded copper alloy are published by Gaitzsch (1987, 222; abb. 2) from Pergamon and dated to the 13th century; he also illustrates a Franco-Neopolitan bit with such looped attachments connecting the reins to the harness hooks of a curb bit dated between c. 1325 and 1350 (Gaitzsch 1987; taf. 64.3).
