Late Medieval to early Post-Medieval copper alloy fragment of a candle holder, dating to c. AD 1350-1600. The fragment consists of the bowl of the candle holder.
The fragment is cylindrical in shape and hollow throughout, beginning with the narrower stem projecting from the underneath of the bowl from an old worn break. The bowl is decorated with two parallel incised lines running around the circumference in the middle of the bowl and at the top, where it terminates in an irregular worn break. The beginning of the stem is marked by three incised lines running around the circumference.
The object has a dark green/brown patina with broad areas of corrosion. It measures 38.0mm in length, 21.2mm in circumference at the bowl and 19.8mm at the stem, and weighs 29.38g.
Similar examples are recorded on the PAS database, including OXON-6FD783 and LVPL-82BB0F, and are usually dated from the 14th to 16th century. Egan (2005, pp.80-81, no. 337) illustrates a similar example which is dated from associated ceramics to c. AD 1530-1570. However, three similar examples from Read (2001, p.125, nos. 892-894) are dated to c.AD 1350-1400. A suggested date range encompassing both ranges is suggested here as the item is without a secure archaeological context.
