Roman copper alloy enamelled bow brooch of type and of Wroxter, Trumpet-derivative type and 2nd century AD date

The cast brooch incomplete, missing the leg, head-plate and pin (with a surviving length of 36.6mm, a surviving depth of 14.3 mm and a weight of 10.4g). The spring remains in place, coiled twice either side of the pin is secured in a D-shaped recess at the rear of the head (13.2mm long and 16.1mm wide external) with the chord tensioned below and an iron axis bar secured in the sides of the head. Above the head is a damaged plate or integral chain-loop and decorated with a diagonal lentoid moulding at the break. The step moulding at the head is carefully decorated with notches, within a grooved border. The top of the bow is of inverted T-shaped section with straight near-parallel sides (with a width of 7.9mm and a thickness of 4.6mm). The top ridge was decorated on its top and side surfaces with enamelled cells with traces of a now pale blue-green enamel surviving in one of the side cells. The mid bow was defined by diagonal lentoid leaves, below which the leg appears to have been of D-shaped section, just above the break. The rear of the leg has the beginnings of the catch-plate evident. The surface is heavily-corroded with a dark-green patina partially surviving.
