MOUNT

Unique ID: YORYM-61162A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete copper-alloy mount of Roman date, c.AD 43 – 410. The mount is in the form of a lion’s head and is probably from a box or casket.

The object is circular with a domed front face comprising a smaller circular boss projecting from the centre. A smaller sub-triangular boss projects from the centre of the smaller circle, representing the snout of the animal.

The outer curved edge of the upper surface is encircled by a ring of engraved transverse, sub-parallel, curved lines forming the lion’s mane. The smallest circular boss depicts engraved lentoid eyes, and a curved recessed line for the mouth.

The reverse of the object is concave with the remains of an attachment rivet at its centre. Worn breaks are present to the edge of the mount.

The object is 28mm diameter, 18mm tall, 1mm thick and weighs 16g.
