Unique ID: LON-FB13A5

Object type certainty: Certain

An early Post Medieval lead alloy pilgrim's badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Willesden dating to the early 16th century. The badge depicts the Virgin and Child within a crescent moon. The Virgin wears a crown and holds the Child in her left arm and a sceptre in her right hand, all within the horns of the moon. Around the base of the moon is a row of pellets. On the reverse are the casting seam and the downward pointing pin, squashed flat to the back of the badge.

This image is common on pilgrim badges found in London dating to the first three decades of the 16th century, though probably began slightly earlier (Spencer, 1998, nos. 155-159). The source of this type of badge is unknown but is believed to be associated with Our Lady of Willesden (ibid, p. 149).
