A late Roman cast copper alloy buckle of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) Type 1b, consisting of a D-shaped frame, with moulded and incised symmetrical zoomorphic decoration. The arms of the frame are decorated to depict a pair of confronted dolphins, with transverse ridged collars at the neck, incised line mouths and punched ring and dot eyes. The crests of the dolphins are developed into a pair addorsed horse heads expanding outwards from the outer edge of the frame; these also have ring and dot eyes. The reverse of the buckle is undecorated. Circa late 3rd - late 4th century AD
