An incomplete copper alloy and iron mount dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1450). The object is sub-circular in plan with a central ciruclar recess, a raised circular border surrounding this and a raised lip around the edge. Roughly two thirds of the outer edge are now missing. On the reverse the centre is recessed and the edge slopes away from a raised circular rim before the edge. There appears to be the remains of a point of attachment projecting from the raised rim on the reverse. There is also a possible rivet hole positioned in the void between the inner and outer raised rims. The central recess and surrounding border retain iron fixings, though the mount as a whole is very worn and corroded.
Comparable examples can be seen in Griffiths et al. (2007: 115) no. 1005; and Egan and Pritchard (2002: 180) no. 930. Such mounts would have been affixed to leather, probably as part of harness decoration and may have held glass mounts in the recesses (ibid.).
The overall dimensions are as follows: 41.57mm in length, 46.82mm in width, 8.38mm in thickness and 23.52g in weight.
