SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: WILT-3E54E3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Medieval lead alloy pointed oval seal matrix, measuring 33.5x22.5x3.5mm and weighing 15.22g. The seal matrix is very worn and damaged.
The reverse is slightly rounded with a broken loop at one end. Extending from it and running down the centre of the reverse is a 2mm, 2mm high rib. To either side at least three tendrils/ curlicues extend, curling around at the end. At the centre of the rib, there is a point which appears to be slightly higher and wider than the rest of the rib.
The opposite face is flat and damages around the edges. The legend is made up of large-ish letters well-spaced within a boundary of two incised lines. It reads +S':IOhIS WyThER Seal of John Wyther.
The central decoration around which the legend runs is clear in form but unclear as to what it actually is. There seem to be three ?implements, perhaps two knives with a sickle in the centre. If so it is likely John Wyther was a doctor.
Probably 13th century.

Inscription: +S':IOhIS WyThER
