An early-medieval Merovingian gold tremissis, 'National'/'mint-and-moneyer' series dating c.AD 590-670, mint of Saint-Denis, ancient Catolacus (CATOLACO on coin), moneyer: Ebrigiselus (Ebregisilo on coin). Belfort (1892) no. 1479, Prou (1892) no. 835, Felder (2003) no. 892.

Obverse: Diademed and cuirassed bust right. Legend: CATO[L]ACO+ (retrograde).  Reverse: Anchor Cross on globe. Legend: +EBREGISILO.

Measurements: 12.57mm in diameter, 1.27g in weight.

Discussion: This coin shows significant finishing to the coin die, additionally it can be die linked to EMC 1989.0061 also found in Kent and Felder (2003) no. 892, which is in the collection of the department of Monnaies, Médailles et Antiques de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. It is worth noting that both the other comparable coins noted above have been later modified whether with a piercing or attachment points while the example here does not appear to have been modified.

Conclusion: This coin was found in association with KENT-83515A KENT-687A04 and KENT-672C14 and and two small lead discs/weights KENT-688E85 and KENT-689A2D. As the coins are all precious metal (gold) and date to before 1721 they, and related objects constitute potential treasure under the treasure act 1996.

Notes:

Peckham hoard coin 2.
