A complete copper-alloy bifacial coin weight, for the Portuguese 'joe' gold coins, issued between 1760 and 1773 AD. The value of 18 shillings indicated was equivalent to the 'half joe'/2 escudos coin (Withers & Withers 2011, 66).
Both faces are marked with a small letter S above a larger 18 above a small 4.1/4, all within a border made of small pellets. The coin weight has a rough surface and is dark brown in colour.

Notes:
Portuguese gold coins were widely used in England in from c1700-1770 AD and many British maker's made sets of weights to weigh the moidore and 'joe' series of gold coins.
