A Post-Medieval pewter Lyon counter, dating to 1574-1590. Obverse: Rampant lion (left) with garter; crowned. Legend: HONI . SOIT - MAL . Y . PEN. Reverse: Crowned oval French shield bearing three fleurs de lis, placed between two crowned pillars; leafy sprays around. As Mitchiner 4642-4648.
Notes:
This type of token is associated with the order of the garter and Henri III of France in particular, who was invested as knight of the garter in AD 1575. They have been given the name 'Lyon' counters because they can be identified with the 'Lyon' counters cited in the Hengrave (Suffolk) Book of Expenses for April 1583 (Barnard, 1916: 86). These counters form one of the three major series of Elizabethan counters (Exchequer counters, Lyon counters and Crowned Rose counters). Although the majority have been found in London, they circulated across a wide area of the Home Counties during the 1570' to 1590's.
