An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy uniface token of Powell type 14 (Cross).
The token would have been broadly circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. However part of its circumference has been chipped in one quarter. One surface has a clear, cast, raised cross design with a pellet in each quarter, making it reminiscent of a Medieval or Post-medieval coin. Three of the pellets are very worn. This classifies as Powell type 14. The opposite surface is flat and plain.
The token is a medium grey/brown colour.
It has a diameter of 16mm
Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses including as weights, tickets and gaming tokens. They are believed to be locally produced for a local use, making precise dating difficult. Those with coin-like designs were previously thought to be Medieval but Post-medieval moulds for this type have also been found. See Powell: Classification for Lead Tokens online
