Ovate handaxe in fairly rolled condition, of Wymer J,J (1999) type K, of very dark brown patinated flint with lighter brown coarse inclusions within the flint, recent damage to parts of the edges show the original colour of the flint to have been black with grey inclusions. Both faces are entirely modified by invasive semi-soft hammer flake removals, confidently struck with flake scars overlapping in the centre, no trace of the original surface of the "blank" for this piece remain. There is no tranchet blow to sharpen the point (point type v) and the butt is neatly flaked to a semi-circle plan (butt type b), both cutting edges appear to be straight (edge type e). Recent damage to the point makes the plan appear almost circular, rather than slightly teardrop shaped.
Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 150,000 BC, though it is more likely to be of the earlier date given, roughly contempory with Happisburgh Site 1.
