Medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III (1327-1377), Fourth Coinage (Pre-Treaty Period), Series G type Ga/Gd mule, dating AD1356-61 (North 1189/1190), mint: London. Ref: North 1991: 52.
The coin is slightly chipped around parts of the edge and is lightly clipped removing the tops of some lettering and creates an irreularly shaped edge to parts of the coin.
The reverse includes an odd spelling, reading EXALTABITVR IN GALhORI instead of the standard EXALTABITVR IN GLORIA, a rarely seen variation (Potter 1963: 128).
Notes:
There are three other PAS-recorded examples of this coin type which use the 'GAhLORI' spelling mistake on the reverse:SUSS-538E67, SUSS-B348A4 and HAMP-4D93CA.
A rare coin type this is the first coin of its type recorded by the PAS from West Berkshire.
Note that North (1991: 52) states that his nos 1189/1190 'are the same coin entered twice to represent each sub-series'.
