A Roman brooch of Hod Hill type. The wings are largely missing – what remains curves back on itself and would have formed a loop to hold the bar/spring? – U-shaped slot between wings. There is a raised lateral ridge with a waisted narrowed section either side at the head of the brooch at the junction of the wings and the bow. Bow is thickened, tapers slightly tapering and is moulded forming a raised central ridge with a wide groove either side (W. 6.25-5.05mm). The reverse of the bow is flat and undecorated. There is a raised lateral ridge with a waisted narrowed section either side at the junction of the bow and the foot. There is another slight lateral ridge at the top of the foot which then expands slightly before tapering to a small foot knob with a lateral ridge above it. There is a crude longitudinal line of incised dots off centre on the upper surface of the foot. The remains of the catchplate survive on the reverse of the foot. L. 45.5mm. W. 12.03-2.25mm. Th. 3mm. Wt. 3.51g. (Good).
