An early Post-Medieval lead alloy pilgrim's badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Willesden (London) dating to the early 16th century. The badge depicts the Virgin and Child within a crescent moon. The Virgin Mary wears a crown and holds baby Jesus (head missing) in her left arm and a sceptre in her right hand within the horns of a crescent moon. The moon is decorated with a row of pellets around the perimeter. On the reverse, the integral pin is intact.
This badge is very similar to no.155 and 156 in Brian Spencer’s book, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges (1998:149-150). Similar examples are also recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: LON-8CBC42, LON-FEC2A2 and LON-6FA825.
