An early Post-Medieval lead alloy pilgrim's badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Willesden (London) dating to the early 16th century. The badge depicts the Virgin and Child within a crescent moon. The Virgin wears a crown (missing) and holds baby Jesus in her left arm and a sceptre (missing) in her right hand within the horns of the crescent moon. The base of the moon is decorated with a row of pellets. On the reverse, the integral pin is missing.
This badge is very similar to no.155 and 156 in Brian Spencer’s book, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges (1998:149-150). Similar examples are also recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: LON-8CBC42, LON-FEC2A2 and LON-6FA825.
