A fragment from contemporary imitation of a Merovingian tremissis of the 'mint & moneyer'/'National' series (not further defined) dating cAD580-670.
Obverse: Bust right(?) [...]N[...] (note N reversed)
Reverse: central cross [...]ONIV[...]
The broken edges of the coin appear quite corroded and appear to indicate the coin has a base metal core, and is thus a copy or contemporary imitation.
The partial reverse inscription may read ONIVO/ ONIAO/ONTVO etc. The only coins which similar inscriptions in Belfort (1892) are numbers 3285 (ONIACO VICO), 5295 (ONIVSTI) and 5874 (ONTNNVV+) but all obverse inscriptions. Of these, 3825 seems most likely, but unfortunately is not illustrated.
