A cast copper-alloy Iron Age Gallo-Belgic potin of the Suessiones, c.60-20 BC, 'Soissons Eye Boar' type. Obverse: Head right. Reverse: Eye and boar motifs, pellets and neck torc below. ABC, p. 31, no. 85; Allen, 1995: p. 95, nos. 444-447; Scheers, 1977: no. 198.

This potin is in very good condition and shows little wear. The type is Gallo-Belgic and not common in Britain, with approximately 30 recorded examples on the PAS (including CCI records). However, a die matrix or punch has recently been recorded in Hampshire (SUR-08FD05) for a potin reverse of this type, bringing into question the location and processes behind their manufacture.

Notes:

The Suessiones "six peoples" lived around the river Aisne (Axona "river"). their capital: Noviodunum "New Fort" modern Soissons (Aisne, Picardy), which is named after the tribe.
