FINGER RING

Unique ID: WMID-2D67CB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: A complete gold and gem set finger ring. The hoop is sub circular in shape, with no decoration on the band. The gem is set in a rectangular raised bezel, positioned with the long edges at right angles to the hoop. A dark red or purple gem is set inside the bezel. It does not appear to be faceted.

Dimensions: Length: 2.5 mm. Width: 2.0 mm. Weight: 1.33 g

Discussion: The ring broadly conforms to the type of decorative gemstone finger rings described by Egan and Pritchard (2002, 326, fig 215) in particular that illustrated as '1612'. Examples of this type of ring are numerous on the PAS database, including Treasure cases 2019T158 (BERK-57430E), 2012-T678 (NLM-38D575) and 2016-T1016 (NMS-93A6EF). Nevertheless, all comply with the stratified 14th century dating pattern developed by Egan and Pritchard (ibid).

Reference: Egan, G. and Pritchard, F. 2002. Dress Accessories, c.1150-c.1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London). London.

Notes:

Conclusion: Therefore as this finger ring has a precious metal content in excess of 10% and is older than 300 years, it should be considered to be potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.

Note: Find has not been seen in person by FLO. Found during Covid-19 Lockdown period.
