Thick, hard hammer struck handaxe, of Wymer. J (1999) type D/M, crudely shaped with an elongated "ficron" type point, largely due to the limited width presented by the "blank", this appears to have been a narrow, natural, thermally (frost) fractured fragment of a much larger nodule, the dorsal face retains a section of thin. weathered cortex at what is now the butt, immediately above this was an area of projecting flint, now removed by repeated blows to either side, using the projection as a platform, this has resulted in one of the flake scars running in the opposite direction from one side of the centre of the face to the lateral edge, all other flakes have been removed in the conventional way.
The flint has been slightly rolled since deposition, the surfaces are patinated black (from exposure to the dark silts) with pale grey coarse inclusions with some patchy orange areas, mostly to one face. The recent damage to the edges and the high points are a bright orange, the deeper damage shows the original colour of the flint to have been pale buff/grey. Lower Palaeolithic 600,000 to 150,000 BC.
