A copper-alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape of medieval date, (c 12th-13th century). The chape comprises a sheet of metal with a transverse fold at the lower margin, creating trapezoidal plates on either side, the upper margins of each having decorative cutaways. The front of each plate has incised decoration; one side with a saltire the other with a herringbone pattern of lines. Each plate has two long projecting arms from the top corners which terminate in circular rivet holes with traces of iron rivets remaining.
