A complete copper-alloy staple of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1550 – 1750.
The object comprises a sub-rectangular plate with elongated tapering triangular terminals. The terminals are bent at near right angles to the main plate. It is undecorated.
The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The object is 40.9mm long, 6.9mm wide, 1.5mm thick and weighs 2.5g.
A similar object is recorded as CORN-EAC585 which states that such staples are thought to have been used to hold wooden objects together, but are not robust enough for boat timbers. The record also cites similar copper-alloy staples in Ottaway and Rogers (2002) p.2829, fig.1408 dated to the 14th century; and in Griffiths, Philpott & Egan (2007) p.288, pl. 73 which are later in date; and in Margeson (1993) p.139, fig.104 which are dated to the 16th to 17th century.
