A hoard of 50 1oz South African Krugerrand gold coins struck by the Rand Refinery in Germistone, South Africa and comprised of 48 coins minted in 1974 (bags 1-48) and 2 coins minted in 1975 (bags 49-50). The hoard was discovered during the 2020 Coronavirus lockdown and remained with finder until 07/10/2020 due to social distancing restrictions.
The coins were divided between two white plastic coin tubes, one wrapped in a small white towel with pink edging and secured with an elastic band, the other wrapped in an NS&I envelop and pages from a magazine. Each tube had been placed into an empty green 'Lyons Original' coffee metal tin with a plastic lid; due to corrosion the expiration date is complete illegible on one of the tins but on the other it could read either: ??//03 (2003) or ??/83 (1983). The two tins were found in a Tesco supermarket plastic carrier bag, printed with 'Cystic Fibrosis Trust - Tesco Charity of the Year 2002'.
The coins bear the same obverse and reverse, with the only difference being the date:
Krugerrand coins are a gold alloy, containing 91.67% 22 carat fine gold and 8.33% copper. At the time of writing, it would cost around £83,950 to purchase coins of these dates from online bullion dealers.
Notes:
As the coins are substantially comprised of precious metal (gold), the original owners are unknown and, considering their approximate value it, seems highly likely that they were concealed with the intent of rediscovery. Therefore, the hoard should be submitted for consideration as Treasure Trove under the Treasure Act 1996.
Two similar modern hoards, which were declared treasure, can be seen in the Shropshire Piano Hoard (HESH-F5F412; 2016-T969) and the Hackney Hoard (PAS-867115; 2007 T365).
