An incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy buckle dating to c.AD1660-1720.
The buckle frame is sub-rectangular in plan and a shallow D-shape in cross section with a convex front and flat reverse. It is also slightly convex in profile. The frame has been drilled at its middle to allow for a separate spindle. The frame has moulded decoration consisting of four floral pellets placed near the centre of the frame (one on each side of the where central axis bar goes through the frame). There is also a moulded sub-triangular leaf in the middle of each narrow edge, the point facing outwards, with a groove at its centre, for the pin to rest on, from which diagonal lines extend.
The chape is concreted to the spindle by iron corrosion product. From this point is narrows to a thin waist before then expanding outwards again into two narrow hooks with a central triangular knop projecting between them, much like an anchor. No makers mark is visible on the chape.
The buckle and chape are both a very dark green colour.
It is 45.6 mm long, 23.3mm wide, 8.0mm thick and weighs 11.16 grams
A near identical example is illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 99, No. 99) who suggests that these buckles date from the post medieval period (1660-1720) and were used as shoe or knee buckles.
