Medieval or Post medieval copper-alloy sheet scabbard chape dating from AD 1300-1800. It is trapezoid in plan and oval in cross section with flattened front and back. The sheet has been rolled into a tube with a single overlapping seam down the back. base is broken but it appears to be tapering to a rounded point. The top, attachment, end is also broken across the back. At the front this end is cut into a V-shape which may be original. There are irregular holes to each side, just below this edge which may be broken attachment points. Faint incised lines running down the front and converging may be the remains of decoration. It measures 39.7mm long, 17.6mm wide, 9.1mm in thickness (the sheet is 0.6mm thick) and weighs 7.47g (including the mud inside).
The flattened front and back faces may be original. A similar, but decorated, chape is illustrated in the Ward Perkins (1940) plate LXXX, number 6 but such simple designs continued well into the Post medieval period and the rounded end and flattened shape is similar to SOM-D4CAA5 for example.
