Rutland may be the smallest County but it has Big Archaeology.
Glaston is the home to an Upper Paleolithic Hyena den.
The county has impressive Bronze age activity at Ketton, Tixover and Oakham and a Founders hoard from Ketton.
The county was heavily settled in the Roman period with a defended town and fort at Great Casterton, a town and temple at Thistleton and another recently excavated Temple at Egleton. We also have a few large coin hoards, 2000 radiates from Tinwell, 870 silver coins and a stunning gold ring from Whitwell and one containing 1418 nummi found within a small cemetery at Ketton.
The area is rich in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, Empingham, Great Casterton and Market Overton, with some stunning finds displayed in Rutland County Museum.
The Medieval period has left us with deserted villages, a stunning great hall at Oakham castle, part of a Bishops palace at Lyddington with wonderful fishpond earthworks and a wonderful Norman church at Tickencote. The small but stunning is the Brooke Reliquary, was once housed in the now lost Priory there.
Lastly a large civil war coin hoard was found at Ryhall with a large, slightly later one from Leighfield parish.
