This year marks 15 years of the Portable Antiquities Scheme as a national scheme. Throughout the year we’ll be celebrating finds from each county – a find a day for the whole year! Here are the finds we’ve chosen from Dorset:
Post-medieval fire mark (DOR-8DC465): a lead fire mark of the Royal Exchange Assurance.
Palaeolithic handaxe (DOR-A494A4): a flint handaxe, c.800,000-250,000BC.
Bronze Age spearhead (DOR-DC23F5): a copper alloy socketed, side-looped spearhead.
Early Medieval strap end (DEV-264F62): a copper alloy strap end decorated in the Winchester style with two intertwined beasts.
Roman nail cleaner (HAMP-2414E0): a copper alloy nail cleaner with ring-and-dot decoration.
Roman plate brooch (DOR-2B47AB): a copper alloy enamelled plate brooch in the shape of a bird.
Medieval seal matrix (DOR-0C049B): a copper alloy seal matrix depicting York Minster.
