Applications are invited for an HLF-funded IFA Workplace Learning Bursary in Building Recording based at the Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales. This is an excellent opportunity to receive training in the core skills of recording historic buildings, and gain experience in one or more key areas of building study and interpretation, under the supervision of Stephen Hughes, Head of Survey Branch, and other specialist staff at RCAHMW. Peter Wakelin, Secretary and Chief Executive, will act as mentor to the post holder, to provide support and encouragement throughout the placement.

The successful candidate will work in a team of established Royal Commission staff concerned with the recording and interpretation of buildings, including specialists in measured survey, 3-d reconstruction, dendrochronology, photography, emergency building recording, documentary research and the interpretation of vernacular, industrial, agricultural and religious buildings from the Middle Ages to the present day. He/She will be supported in the acquisition of skills in all the principal areas of building recording in the Royal Commission, and have the opportunity to develop a defined project to be agreed on chapel architecture, farm buildings, vernacular cottages, emergency recording or reconstruction. There may also be an opportunity to use the experience gained in this placement towards a vocational Qualification in Archaeological Practice.
